Things I will never understand (8/15/12)

Who buys this? I don’t even want to know who would eat it. Or how to cook it. Please refrain from sending me recipes. In fact, if I came upon a recipe that called for a “hog’s head” I would throw out the cookbook.

They sell this at my local grocery store. I don’t live in an area that one normally associates with this type of cuisine (we are more likely to be observed, in our natural habitat, “noshing” on a bagel).

I know it’s exact location in the supermarket, ditto for the live lobsters; I had to avoid them when my daughter was little. She used to kind of freak out. I don’t blame her.

Might they serve as an ingredient in magic potions? If so, I might be interested in that type of recipe. As long as I didn’t also have to acquire “hair of newt”. I have amphibian issues. And no black magic. I don’t want to get mixed up in that stuff. Although I probably have the wardrobe.

This one, pictured above, appears to be on clearance. Just when you thought this post couldn’t get any more disturbing.

A couple of years ago when visiting a friend in Panama City, Panama, he had to pay some kind of utility bill which can be done at any of the major supermarkets in the Republic. While he was standing in line I wandered around the store looking at the prices of things. Of course stuff imported from the States, like Jiff peanut butter, were outrageous. Wandering down into the dead animal section of the store, I found that fresh chicken was a fraction of what it cost in Fort Lauderdale where I was living at the time. The pork loins looked good but then I cam across a package that you couldn’t have gotten me to buy with a gun pressed against my temple. It was labeled simply, “MARINATED MEAT.” No clue was given what kind of meat it was, Just that whatever was under the plastic wrapping was marinated.

Okay, but you were in Panama. Food is supposed to be “weird” in godforsaken places.

I see this at my local supermarket in Northern New Jersey. I assume it sells or why would they carry it? I really do want to know who buys this and what they use it for.

I think you made the right decision in staying away from the “marinated meat”. It’s probably best that you never know what exactly it was. Come to think of it, this is pretty much what I tell myself whenever I eat a hot dog.

      Thanks for reading my blog!

“Like” isn’t exactly what I mean. I guess that would count as “slow food.” Your market is so trendy.

It used to be attached to bacon. How bad could it be?

I think I have a pot that head would fit into. I’m worried the eyes and teeth would float to the top though.
