PSA: “Twinkies” vs. “Dreamies”

There is no substitute for the original!

There is no substitute for the original!

DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO THINKING THAT SOMETHING CALLED “DREAMIES” ARE, DESPITE THEIR SIMILAR APPEARANCE, A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE TWINKIE.

They are made by an outfit called “Mrs. Freshley’s”. I don’t know whether or not Mrs. Freshley is whipping up anything else to resemble other Hostess products, but if her foray into the world of the crème-filled sponge cake is any indication, I would caution you to be wary. Very wary.

I’m of the opinion that you can’t really go wrong with any kind of crème-filled sponge cake, but if you are expecting “Dreamies” to be as soft, lovely, and decadent as the beloved “Twinkie”, you will be disappointed. And out about a buck seventy.

Consider this a public service announcement.

You’re welcome.

  1. Fortunately, I’ve never had a taste for Twinkies… But I understand your rejection of the pale imitation. Rant on!

We follow these stories closely, probably more than most…after all, my husband lost his job of 25 yrs because of the Hostess shutdown. Parts of the company are being purchased (and no, the Twinkie recipe was not bought by Mrs. Freshley). But sadly, none of the acquisitions included re-employing those who lost their jobs. I know there’ve been lots of these stories, and plenty of jokes in the media, but in our house, we mourned the loss of Hostess for a much different reason.

You certainly have more reason than I do to lament the loss of the Twinkie! It is a shame that whoever bought the recipes won’t be hiring the laid off Hostess workers.

  3. Never tried either but I did get the palpable dismay when Twinkies were no more. I think I even did a blogpost about it

This is a welcome respite from the weighty issues of global superfoods. Mrs. Freshley—she is a cruel mistress.

I agree! “Dreamies” are to “Twinkies” as “Coa-Coa Comets” are to “Coa-Coa Puffs.” People need to stop messing with my stuff.
